Building Permits
Depending on the work being done, approval can take at least five to seven business days from the date the permit and all required information is received by the Building Official. Please call us at 651-766-4029 with any questions.
Permit Requirements
Building permits are required for any new construction and most remodeling projects.
Homeowners can do their own work, however; if a contractor is performing the work, they must be either State or City licensed.
Separate permits are needed for mechanical, plumbing and electrical work.
- Some work requiring a building permit: windows, exterior doors, patio doors, roofing, siding, decks.

Plan Requirements
- New construction and additions require two sets of plans, a site plan, and energy calculations (if applicable).
- Remodeling, alterations, decks, or other work require two sets of plans.

| State Surcharge | This amount equals the Valuation of Work x .0005 |
| License Verification Fee | This amount is $5 and is verification cost for state licensed contractors |
| Plan Check Fee | For permits needing plan review, this amount will be determined by the Building Official. Typically this is 65% of the calculated permit fee. |
